Our History

1928

Early life

Our converted 1928 Red Rattler train carriage started life at the Walsh Island Dockyards in Newcastle, and remained in service until 1991 as part of the Sydney train network.

The classic carriage was bought by a couple in Mudgee, who originally intended it for truck driver accommodation, but instead became office quarters for their business.

Modern day accommodation

In 2020, it was decided this grand old dame could be better appreciated and used for short stay accommodation. So the Red Rattler was moved to a property in Windeyer, where you can visit her today.

Other artefacts

Another fascinating historical artefact you'll find on the property is the big steel door into the Silo Bar, which is actually a gaol door from the old Mudgee Lock Up, circa 1833.

Notably, if you look carefully on the inside of the door, you can make out some names - presumably of prisoners -  scratched into the old paintwork.
